ABOUT
Kathy Orah
LICENSED THERAPIST
In my practice of psychotherapy, I utilize a whole person approach to help people deal effectively with life changes, whether they are trying to reestablish themselves in some aspect of their life or just redefining their life in a way that may provide new meaning.
I started my career as an elementary school teacher. As much as I enjoyed teaching I was always more interested observing my students behavior in the class room and family dynamics than teaching. So I followed my heart and decided to study psychology. That lead me to attend the Wurzweiler School of Social Work and I have never looked back. I graduated in 2008 and have been working for the past 15 years as a licensed therapist.
I am a wife and mother of five beautiful children and in 2016 I had a traumatic miscarriage that transformed me personally and professionally. What I learned from that experience changed my perspective on life. Since then I have adopted a more spiritual approach in every aspect of my life.
I am also an Iranian immigrant and know first hand how trans-generational and cultural differences in my own family affected our entire family system. It can create a barrier between parents from a different generation and country of origin and the new generation of kids growing up in a different world. Miscommunication and lack of understanding and respect for the new or old culture can lead to a disconnect between parents and their adolescence and may cause behavioral issues. This lack of communication can lead to acting out behaviors and drug and alcohol use and abuse.
Drug and alcohol abuse has become more prevalent in the community as kids have more access to them and teens are maturing earlier. It has become an epidemic across ages and cultures in the U.S. as parents struggle with their teens who may have started using and abusing substances that started as experimentation with their peers.
I have a Master’s level hypnosis practitioner training from the NLP Center of New York where I have learned how to perform Ericksonian hypnosis. I incorporate inner child work, journey work, somatic work and other intuitive healing techniques during hypnosis to enhance one’s healing potential.
